How genomic, clinical, EHR, PRO and real-world data combine to create a sixth sense – and a deeper understanding of how to treat cancer
Imagine trying to drive a car, but using only your mirrors.
You wouldn’t last long.
After screeching to a halt (or worse), you’d complain that you can’t anticipate what’s ahead. To be a good driver, you need all your senses – your forward vision, your hearing, your experience of hazard perception.
It’s a little bit like trying to make meaningful decisions in Oncology through using only siloed, historical data. By looking only backwards, we can’t always determine how to address and improve an individual patient’s future. And by focussing on clinical data, we limit ourselves to narrow cohorts and the peculiarities of the approval process.
It doesn’t have to be this way. With new techniques that sensibly integrate a variety of sources, including the use of genomic data, we are finally able to move from sick-care to healthcare. We can finally look forwards rather than just backwards.
The truth is, no matter how well-curated our EHR or clinical data is, only by combining knowledge do we obtain a sufficiently meaningful picture of the patient’s risk profile, treatment variance and future outcomes, and determine suitable treatment and prognosis. Soon we will even be able to include claims data to help patients manage their treatment planning.
